FAQ

Who can use the GAITABASE?

Anyone wishing to use the GAITABASE will have to register as a user. Registration will be limited to clinicians and researchers.

>> Back <<

Who can upload data?

Anyone with gait data stored in a .c3d file of temporal spatial data captured with a GAITRITE mat will be able to upload data to the GAITABASE.

How will the quality of data be assured?

At present all data will be accepted. We are currently developing a certification process based on individuals supplying data from repeat assessments on the same subjects which will be assessed for reliability. Data from certified suppliers will be flagged and users will be able to limit searches to only include these.

>> Back <<

How will access to data be governed?

Access to data will be governed by a system of permissions. The default for these will restrict how general users will be able to access data. Suppliers of data, however, will be able to grant permissions giving greater access to data to selected users. This will be managed by the web interface and subject only to negotiation between individual suppliers and users.

Who will be able to access data?

The GAITABASE is a data sharing tool and the basic principal is that anyone who has supplied some data will be able to view all the data.

Whilst all data can be viewed, however, users will not, generally, be able to download data. This will deter unauthorised publication or other use of data. In order to download data users will have to negotiate permission to do so with the original suppliers of the data.

A demonstration version will allow anyone to query and download a limited subset of the data originating from gait laboratories in Melbourne.

How is confidentiality assured?

All identifiers are stripped from data and a new one, specific to the GAITABASE, will be issued to the supplier. Even this is hidden from all other users. Only a minimum of demographic data will be stored to prevent identification of individual subjects.

By default, data will not be displayed unless they are derived from three or more subjects (data from individual subjects will be accessible to those granted permission to view it by the original supplier of the data).

What are the ethical issues?

We have ethical approval to receive and store data and make it available over the web. This is based on the principle that all data is de-identified. There is no limit on this to who we can accept data from.

Suppliers of data however may well have to get their own ethical approval to do so. There is growing experience of suppliers who have gone through this process and we will offer support any new potential users for this.

>> Back <<

How will data integrity be assured?

Data will be stored on a computer not used for any other purpose and regularly backed up. A record will be kept of when data was first uploaded and of any subsequent modifications.

This will allow certification of the provenance of research data and, coupled with the GAITABASE’s in built analytical tools, will provide traceability of the end results of analyses back to the raw data on which they are based.

>> Back <<

What are the technical details?

GAITABASE is design to work on the most used web browsers such as MS Internet Explorer, Netscape, and Mozilla Firefox. The data is stored in a MySQL database server situated at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. The interface is written with script languages including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, and Fusebox 3.0.

There is additional software that facilitates uploading data from a GAITRite database or .c3d files. This software can be downloaded from the GAITABASE web site.

Who is responsible for the GAITABASE?

The GAITABASE has been developed and will be maintained by the Centre for Clinical Research Excellence in Clinical Gait Analysis and Gait Rehabilitation (the Gait CCRE). This is funded by the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (Grant No. 264597).

The CCRE agrees to be governed by the same rules for data access as all other users of the GAITABASE.
